Welcome to Vilnius and Lithuania or as locals would say SVEIKI ATVYKĘ!

You are already here so you know that Vilnius is the capital of Lithuania, a fairly small country in Northern Europe. In this tour, you will take a live walk with Vilnius tour guide Lina Dusevičienė as she tells you inspiring stories about the Lithuanian fight for freedom over the centuries and how those stories impacted the way Vilnius looks right now.

You will hear stories from the 14th century when Vilnius was born, as well as the stories from the Soviet occupation era, stories about the first rock concerts, our freedom fighters, secret initiatives, and many more. After this tour, you will have a better understanding of why Lithuanians have such a high drive for freedom and why they always emphasize its importance.

Lina recorded this tour while walking on the streets of Vilnius herself so you would be able to feel like walking with a local friend.

XIV amžius: žilas ir legendinis Vilnius
1 H. 37 MIN.5.40 KMlt-flagLT
🗺️ Route

Prieš beveik 700 metų, XIV a., ant septynių kalvų, stūgaujant geležiniam vilkui, gimė miestas, kuriam buvo lemta garsinti Lietuvos vardą plačiajame pasaulyje. Vilnius – nepaprastas miestas, nes čia dar viduramžiais sutarė įvairios kultūros ir religijos. Kol žvangėjo kryžiuočių kardai, keliavo pirkliai, darbavosi amatininkai, sostinę saugojo aplinkiniuose miškuose gyvenančios dievybės, degė aukurai ir gimė iki šių laikų išlikusios legendos. Ir šiandien geriau įsiklausę išgirsite šimtamečių ąžuolų ošimą, o užsimerkę išvysite ugnį kuriančias vaidilutes. Ant kalvos iškilusios pilies bokštas atlaikė šimtmečių istorijos vingius, o po Vilniumi išsiraizgę požemiai išsaugojo ypatingas miesto paslaptis.

XIV century: Vilnius legends
1 H. 37 MIN.5.40 KMen-flagEN
🗺️ Route

Almost 700 years ago, in the 14th century, a city was born on seven hills where an iron wolf stood howling. The city was destined to promote the name of Lithuania across the world. Vilnius is not an ordinary city because different cultures and religions have lived in concord since the Middle Ages. When the swords of the Crusaders clanged, merchants travelled, and craftsmen plodded away, the capital city was protected by deities living in the surrounding forests, flames danced on the altars and legends that have survived to this day were born. If you keep your ears open, you will hear the rustling of the centuries-old oak trees and will see priestesses igniting fires if you close your eyes. The tower of the castle that emerged on the hill withstood the twists and turns of history, and the serpentine catacombs beneath Vilnius have preserved its extraordinary secrets.

You are invited to follow in the footsteps of the birth of Vilnius and discover your own legend!

XIX century: shopping paradise

🗺️ Route

Welcome to a shoppers’ heaven! Advertisements, noise, a lot of toing and froing, big showcases – Vilnius in the 19th century was as active as it is today. In the late 19th century, Vilnius had a population of 154,200 that belonged to various social strata and needed plenty of daily necessities or luxury goods, starting with tatters, lamp oil and salt, and finishing with crayfish tails, mouth-watering chocolate, gilded bows and even cubes of broth. There were around 5,000 shops on the streets of Vilnius that could satisfy even the weirdest customer’s desires.

Just imagine that you are in the Vilnius. Most importantly, don’t forget your wallet and prepare for new discoveries. Merchants, craftsmen and industrialists fought for the attention of shoppers, thus shops in the 19th century took care not only of goods but also of their distinctness. However, be careful – try not to buy fake tea or sausage with strange findings. If you feel unwell after such surprises and have digestive problems, a pharmacist will kindly sell you the latest medicine – kefir. So, leave your horses near the hotel, take some Russian rubles and head to Vilnius’ streets and courtyards where trade was packed into every possible space.

What souvenirs could you get from a 19th-century shop?

XIV век: седой и легендарный Вильнюс
1 H. 37 MIN.5.40 KMru-flagRU
🗺️ Route
