In the Middle Ages, Tallinn was among the better-fortified towns by the Baltic Sea. Viru Gate is one of the two front gates of Tallinn left today, even though it has been repeatedly rebuilt throughout the centuries.

This is where Vene Street begins, bearing such a name (“Vene” means “Russian”) because in 1413 it was the place of an inn for Russian visitors, an Orthodox cathedral and a churchyard.

The south-wall side of the monastery has today become for the Old Town a kind of passage that connects Vene Street to Müürivahe Street.

St. Catherine's Passage

After walking a little, you will come upon a modest yet charming church with a big mechanical clock, bearing the name of Holy Spirit. This is the oldest church in Tallinn, the first mentioning dates from the 14th century.

Town Hall Square was the heart of medieval Tallinn. In different times it has been referred to as the New Market, the Great Market, the German Market and the Swedish Market.

For years there spread a belief about a horrible spirit dwelling at the bottom of the well.

At the spot of the church there stood once, according to a source, a chapel, built by a foreigner even before the Christianization of Estonia in the beginning of the 13th century.

The street bearing such a curious name (“Lühike jalg” means “Short Leg” in Estonian) connects downtown to Toompea where representations of leaders and rulers, of the town at first, of the whole country later on, have been situated through centuries.

The cathedral is of interest firstly because it is the youngest social building to have been erected at Toompea, and secondly because its look is by no means typical to local architecture.

On the right-hand side the gate is adjoined by what is probably among the Old Town’s more prominent sights – Fat Margaret, completed in 1529.
