Christ Church

This is a peaceful place for a quiet stroll yet only a couple of hundred metres from the heart of the city. This is where "Alice in Wonderland" was invented.

If you fancy a bit of boating on the Isis - as the Thames is quaintly called as it passes through Oxford - then hire a punt for a couple of hours... pull up on a gentle river bank and picnic. They'll show you how it's done.

Magdalen Bridge Boathouse

If you are in Oxford on May Day then head for Magdalen Bridge to watch Magdalen College choir sing madrigals from the tower at dawn... from then on there's music, dancing, Morris Men and general fun and games in the city all day long.

Magdalen College (May Day)

This is one of Oxford's most elegant buildings. Originally a science library it's now a landmark which you should confuse with the equally grand and circular Sheldonian Theatre ! That's another couple of hundred metres to the north. Contrast and compare the two !

Radcliffe Camera

The Bodleian is one of of Britain's greatest book and periodical collections. It collects so many volumes that its shelf space expands by miles per year. But just enjoy the Tudor exterior as you head along Catte Street.

Bodleian Library

The Turf Tavern is one of Oxford's most popular pubs - but one of the hardest to find. It was a popular drinking and thinking place for the TV detective character Inspector Morse. As indeed were lots of other older pubs in Oxford.

Turf Tavern (Inspector Morse)

Blackwell's bookshops are an Oxford institution whether you want medical textbooks... art history ... posters and prints or music scores... Blackwell's will supply them. Great for a bit of browsing and buying. They straggle along Broad Street.

Blackwell's Booskhop

Oxford is one of a handful of great tourist destinations in the United Kingdom. There is centuries of history in this city. It was the capital of England during the Civil War of the 17th century when King Charles I moved his court here. The colleges make up some of Britain's most stunning architecture and many great figures from world history studied or taught here. Because it is above all a university city the students make sure it's a lively place for a visit.
